Jin Sim

Jin Sim came to Oregon State University from his native Malaysia to study computer engineering. He has been testing hardware at BSG for almost three years, and when he graduates he plans to leverage his experience into a tech job here in the U.S. Jin joined BSG after a friend — a BSG programmer — enthusiastically recommended it. He particularly values the experiential learning aspect of BSG — or as he puts it, the "chance to peek into the outside world" from the safety of the university.

Jin tests networking equipment — wireless cards and access points, switches and servers — for security, functionality and interoperability. He describes his role as that of a "proxy user" — and a hyper-curious one, at that. "We test every feature of a product, including functions no normal consumer would ever touch," Jin says Mostly he wants to make sure it works. "BSG is really good for students, but it's important for businesses and consumers, too," Jin says. "We figure out if there is any problem with the product before it goes to market, saving companies money — preventing recalls and boosting brand loyalty and customer service — and saving consumers frustration."
